As a seaside resort and spa, every year Świnoujście attracts crowds of holidaymakers and bathers from all over Europe. The widest beach in Poland, unspoilt environment, specific microclimate, salt springs and therapeutic mud, as well as the sea-ferry terminal for passengers and cargo, pedestrian border crossing to Germany and insular location - not many towns on the Baltic coast can boast so many great assets.
There are plenty of worth-seeing sites in the town and region.
One of them is unquestionably the widest sandy beach in Poland, stretching on Uznam and Wolin islands. The coast gently slopes to the sea, thus making Świnoujście one of the safest watering places, also for children.
Those who prefer to have a rest away from the hubbub of the resort will find tranquillity on the beach on Wolin Island, stretching between Warszów district and Międzyzdroje.
Also on Wolin Island, visitors will find yet another attraction: the historic 68m tall lighthouse, the tallest on the Baltic coast. Having climbed 300 steps, visitors will enjoy a magnificent panorama of the town and surroundings. Opened for the public after renovation completed in August 2000, the lighthouse instantly became the season's greatest attraction.
A favourite place for leisurely walks and relaxation for both local residents and tourists is the magnificent Spa Park. Founded 170 years ago, the Park abounds in species of Mediterranean vegetation. There are numerous nature monuments throughout the town as well.
Also worth-seeing are harbour breakwaters dating back to the beginning of 19th century, Świnoujście's landmark: the "Młyny" beacon in the shape of a windmill as well as the former Town Hall building, nowadays home of the Fishery Museum. Visitors are recommended to visit the neo-gothic "Stella Maris" Church of the Holy Virgin with picturesque stained-glass windows, the 18th-century Christ Church with replica of a ship suspended under the ceiling in the nave and the gothic church on Karsibór Island.
On both banks of the Świna River there are old 19th-century forts, of which one, called the Angel's Fort, is particularly interesting.
In the high season, social life concentrates in the seaside district, above all on the promenade, around the shell-shaped concert hall and along the entire stretch of shopping and catering establishments. From year to year, renovations add to the glamour of the well-preserved complex of 19th-century buildings.
A stroll along Władysława IV quayside will be especially attractive for visitors from inland Poland. Here they can observe vast harbour installations and various types of vessels, ranging from small pleasure-boats, through fish cutters, tug-boats, giant ferries, and merchant and naval ships.
All year round, pleasure-boats are underway between Świnoujście and Sassnitz on Rügen, and the nearby German summer resorts: Ahlbeck, Heringsdorf and Bansin.
What attracts tourists to Świnoujście is the combination of the urban and the natural. Within the town's boundaries there are 43 km2 of forests and numerous parks. Surrounding waters abound in such fish species as perch, roach, pike-perch, eel and bream. The island of Karsiborska Kępa, an internationally renowned bird sanctuary with a huge diversity of bird species nesting here, is a paradise for ornithologists and photographers.
Not more than 15 kilometres away from the town is located the Wolin National Park. On the German side of the Uznam Island, just behind the border, lies the Usedom Nature Park.
The season in Świnoujście goes on all year round, as in autumn health resort patients come here from both home and abroad in order to submit themselves to the wholesome influence of the climate, salt springs and therapeutic mud. Natural treatment supplemented with modern techniques of physiotherapy allow effective treatment of illnesses of the respiratory and circulatory systems, angio- and cardio-neuroses, skin and gynaecological diseases. The largest treatment-providing establishment is Uzdrowisko Świnoujście S.A., owner of 8 premises in Świnoujście. Uzdrowisko has three physiotherapy institutes and performs ca. 47,000 medical procedures a month.
Today, holidays combined with biological regeneration are becoming more and more popular.
The town offers accommodation to ca. 10,000 guests at a time in all its hotels, holiday homes, boarding-houses, health-treatment establishments, camping sites and private rooms.
